Faculty of Nursing Director

Ayah Khanafer

  • As an undergraduate Nursing student, I bring a perspective grounded in student advocacy and leadership. Over the past two years, I have served as an executive on Nursing Society, in my role as CNSA Official Delegate.

In this position, I have represented University of Windsor nursing students at the national level, participated in policy discussions, and brought advocacy initiatives back to our faculty and students. These experiences have strengthened my understanding of governance, collaboration, and the importance of ensuring student voices are reflected in decision-making.

Through Nursing Society, I have spoken directly with students about their concerns and experiences. Those conversations have shaped how I lead by listening carefully, communicating openly, and ensuring student concerns are brought forward.

With this experience, I am seeking to represent nursing students within the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance. Students deserve a representative who understands their needs, values their input, and is committed to turning their concerns into action.

  • One of the most important issues I care about is academic burnout, particularly within programs like Nursing. Heavy course loads, clinical placements, and high expectations can significantly impact student well-being. Alongside burnout, I am passionate about improving mental health accessibility and strengthening academic supports so that all students feel set up to succeed.

Many students face barriers when trying to access timely mental health services or academic accommodations within the University. I believe we need clearer pathways to support, increased awareness of existing resources, and stronger collaboration between student leadership and administration to ensure services reflect student needs.

In my role, I would advocate for these priorities by raising them directly at UWSA board meetings and ensuring they remain part of ongoing discussions. I would bring forward concerns shared by nursing students while also listening to students across faculties to identify common challenges.

  • I would approach accountability, transparency, and fair decision-making in the same way I currently do as a Nursing Society Executive.

To ensure accountability, I would regularly update students on key discussions, decisions, and outcomes through reports at Nursing Society meetings. Students deserve to know what is being discussed on their behalf and how decisions may impact them.

To seek input, I would use structured and accessible methods such as anonymous forms and feedback opportunities through social media platforms to reach a broader group of students. Social media allows for greater engagement and ensures that students who may not attend meetings still have a voice.

When making decisions, I would prioritize fairness by considering diverse perspectives, reviewing feedback, and advocating based on collective student needs rather than personal opinion.

  • I believe student governance plays a critical role in shaping the student experience by reflecting student needs and advocating on their behalf. Not every student feels comfortable speaking up or navigating institutional systems. Effective student leadership ensures those voices are still heard and represented.

Effective leadership means being approachable, informed, and action-oriented. It means listening, communicating transparently, and ensuring that decisions are reflective of what students are experiencing.

I have been involved in societies and representative roles since the beginning of my undergraduate journey, and I also held governance positions in high school. Those experiences have strengthened my desire to advocate for students and ensure their voices and needs are taken seriously. I am motivated to run because I want to continue contributing to this work.

I hope to bring strong advocacy, representation, and a commitment to fairness to UWSA. My goal is to help tackle student issues and contribute to a campus environment where students feel heard, supported, and represented.
