Senate Student Representative

As a student running for Senator, I bring a perspective shaped by lived experience, academic engagement, and active involvement across campus. I lived in residence in my first year, gaining a strong understanding of student transition and campus life. I am registered with Student Accessibility Services, now commute, and rely on OSAP to support my education. Experiencing campus as a resident, commuter, student accessing accommodations, and financially responsible learner has given me a well-rounded understanding of how academic policies impact students differently.
I am involved in Golden Key, Enactus, and the Outstanding Scholars program, working alongside students from diverse faculties and backgrounds. These experiences have strengthened my ability to collaborate, listen carefully, and represent varied perspectives thoughtfully.
The University Senate shapes academic standards, program development, and student success. Representation at that level must be informed and grounded in real student experience. I take governance seriously and am committed to ensuring student voices are meaningfully present in academic decision-making. I am ready to bring focus, fairness, and responsibility to this role.

The most pressing issues facing students are affordability, mental health, accessibility, and basic needs. Rising tuition and changes to financial aid mean many graduate with significant debt. As a student who relies on OSAP, I understand how financial pressure affects academic focus and well-being. I would advocate for stronger bursaries, transparent tuition decisions, and expanded emergency funding so students are not forced to choose between their education and financial stability.
Food insecurity and housing access are also urgent. Many students balance rent, transportation, textbooks, and daily expenses. I support strengthening campus food initiatives, increasing awareness of available supports, and prioritizing affordable, inclusive housing options.
Mental health and accessibility must remain central in governance. Students need timely, culturally aware services and academic policies that recognize real-life challenges. As a student registered with Student Accessibility Services, I understand how essential accommodations and inclusive practices are for success.
I would engage students through forums, surveys, and direct outreach to ensure concerns are heard and translated into meaningful improvements.

Accountability, transparency, and fairness are essential to strong student governance. If elected, I would approach this role with preparation, honesty, and consistent communication.
Accountability begins with being informed. I would attend meetings fully prepared, review materials carefully, and understand how decisions impact students before voting. Representatives have a duty to act in good faith and in the best interests of those they serve.
Transparency means keeping students aware of what is discussed and decided. I would provide regular updates through social media, forums, and conversations across campus. Governance should not feel distant; students deserve clarity about how and why decisions are made.
To ensure fairness, I would seek input from commuters, residents, students accessing accommodations, and those facing financial pressures. Through surveys and outreach, I would bring diverse perspectives into discussions. My goal is principled, balanced leadership that students can trust.

Student governance should actively shape the student experience, not simply react to issues. It should guide the University in ways that reflect student realities. Effective leadership is informed, prepared, and grounded in service, requiring careful listening and respectful engagement.
Governance works best when it bridges students and institutional decision-making. Policies on academics, accessibility, affordability, and wellness shape our daily lives. Students deserve representatives who understand that impact and approach the role with seriousness and integrity.
I am running because I care about strengthening the academic and campus experience for all students. Through my involvement and lived experiences, I have seen how vital consistent student representation is. I will bring thoughtful analysis, clear communication, and a collaborative mindset to this role, helping build a culture that is accessible, accountable, and forward-thinking.
