Vice President Student Life

Patrick Weatherspoon

  • As a full-time student balancing work, academics, and campus involvement, I understand the pressures students face, from managing deadlines and finances to navigating transportation and staying connected on campus. Student governance must be practical, responsive, and rooted in these everyday realities.

With a background in Public Relations, I bring skills in communication, strategic planning, and community outreach. I understand how to clearly communicate initiatives, gather meaningful feedback, and ensure students are aware of events, services, and decisions that affect them. Transparency and visibility are essential to strong leadership.

Through my work in student organizations and as a Student Experience Ambassador, I have seen how student events are organized and how policies are developed. I recognize where communication gaps exist and how stronger outreach can increase participation.

I am committed to representing students with clarity, accountability, and purpose, ensuring student life programming reflects real needs and creates opportunities for connection across campus.

  • The issues I care most about are affordability, accessibility, and meaningful student engagement. Many students are balancing tuition, rent, and transportation costs, so I would prioritize advocating for a more affordable summer bus pass to reduce financial pressure for those studying or working year-round.

I also believe student life should be more engaging and inclusive. Campus must feel vibrant, multicultural, identity-affirming, and commuter friendly so all students can participate.

Equally important is listening. Through open forums, surveys, and collaboration with student groups, I would ensure student concerns are heard and brought forward within UWSA and the University. Student governance should remove barriers, amplify voices, and create opportunities for connection and that is the approach I would bring to this role.

  • If elected, I will prioritize consistent communication so students understand what events are being planned, how funds are used, and why decisions are made.

I will work closely with the Communications team to ensure the UWSA website and social media platforms are updated regularly and reflect current programming. Clear messaging increases participation and builds trust.

Before implementing major initiatives, I will seek input through surveys, open discussions, and collaboration with diverse student groups. Listening must guide decision-making.

Within UWSA committees and planning spaces, I will advocate for ethical, student-first approaches that prioritize inclusivity, safety, and accessibility. Accountability also means being visible and approachable through established office hours and open communication channels.

Students deserve leadership that is transparent, organized, and responsive

  • Student governance is vital role continuously influencing a vibrant and inclusive campus experience. It should advocate for students while delivering meaningful, well-organized events that enhance student life.

Effective leadership means planning responsibly, communicating clearly, and building strong partnerships with campus departments such as Student Experience, Residence Life, and cultural committees. It also means recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers who help bring events to life.

I am motivated to run because representation and visibility inspire participation. As a commuter and working student, I understand how important it is to feel included in campus life.

I want to contribute organization, creativity, and strong communication to ensure events are accessible, well-promoted, and reflective of our diverse student body. Student leadership should create opportunities for connection and encourage others to step forward and lead.
