Vice President Student Life

Yara Abouzeeni

  • As a student in International Relations with a study in Economics, I bring an analytical and community-centered perspective to student governance. My academic background has trained me to examine systems critically, while my campus leadership has grounded me in the realities students experience.

I currently am in over 10+ clubs/societies, while I serve as the Blue and Gold Coordinator for UWSA, Founder and President of Paws for Cause, and Vice President of Internal Affairs for the Society of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (SAHSS), representing over 1,000 students. In these roles, I organize large-scale events, coordinate volunteers, advocate for wellness, and collaborate with societies and campus partners. Representing a diverse student body has strengthened my commitment to inclusive decision-making and clear communication.

As Vice President Student Life, I would focus on accessible, inclusive programming and strong collaboration with student groups to ensure student life reflects student realities. My goal is to foster a campus where every student feels represented, supported, and engaged.

  • Students are facing increasing pressure from affordability challenges, academic workload, mental health strain, and a growing sense of disconnection on campus. Many are balancing employment, commuting, or family responsibilities while trying to stay engaged in student life. These realities must be reflected in how we design programming and advocacy.

As Vice President Student Life, I would prioritize expanding accessible and low-barrier wellness initiatives, strengthening collaboration with faculty societies and student groups, and ensuring events are inclusive and financially accessible. Student life should not feel exclusive or overwhelming, it should feel supportive and community-driven.

I would actively gather student feedback through one-on-one conversations, office hours, surveys, and direct outreach, and bring those concerns forward in executive and committee discussions. Advocacy must be structured and strategic, translating student input into concrete proposals and measurable action.

My goal is to ensure students not only feel heard, but see real, tangible improvements in their campus experience.

  • As Vice President Student Life, accountability means ensuring student programming, services, and initiatives reflect student needs, and that students can clearly see how decisions are made. I would provide regular updates on student life initiatives, event planning, partnerships, and advocacy efforts, outlining goals, budgets where applicable, and measurable outcomes.

Transparency also means consultation before implementation. I would work closely with faculty societies, campus organizations, and equity-seeking groups to gather input when shaping programming and policy recommendations. Student life decisions should not be made in isolation; they should be informed by the communities they affect.

Fair decision-making requires considering accessibility, affordability, and representation in every initiative. I would approach each decision with consistency, policy awareness, and a commitment to equity.

Ultimately, my role would be to ensure student life is not only engaging, but ethical, inclusive, and accountable to the students it serves.

  • Student governance should actively shape student life in ways students can feel and experience every day. It should ensure programming is meaningful, accessible, and reflective of the diverse realities on our campus. Effective student leadership is present, collaborative, and grounded in listening before leading.

I am running for Vice President Student Life because I have experienced firsthand how powerful intentional student engagement can be. Through organizing events, leading students, and working directly with students across faculties, I have seen how connection, wellness, and representation shape a student’s sense of belonging. Student life is not an extra, it is a core part of how students succeed and feel supported.

As Vice President Student Life, I would prioritize building inclusive programming, strengthening relationships with student groups, and ensuring that student feedback directly informs initiatives. I want to help create a campus environment where students feel seen, valued, and genuinely connected, not just during events, but throughout their entire university journey.
